I do love an outfit with a bit of a nautical twist. And, cliché or not, when we’re staying in Ramsgate I do lean towards clothing that gives more than a nod to my marina surroundings.
So when Mr Chic and I received an invitation to a private viewing at the Turner Contemporary in Margate, I knew I wanted to stay true to my boaty attire, but I also knew I needed to ramp up the glam a notch or two.
This striped jacket and dress from Winser London is the perfect outfit for a spot of cafe culture, I’ve worn it a couple of times dressed down with brightly coloured deck shoes and accessories to while away a few hours, sipping coffee and watching the world go by.
In fact, it’s quickly become so ingrained in my mind as my ‘cafe culture’ outfit that I almost dismissed it when trying to decide what to wear for our gallery visit. But I’m so glad I didn’t! Teamed with hot pink court shoes and clutch, it takes on a whole new look.
As I knew that our invite also included a few cocktails in the courtyard, I also took along a ginormous white sun hat. Well, you know me – I can’t resist a big hat.
If you’re looking for an easy to wear, comfortable outfit that you can glam up or dress down I can highly recommend this Winser two piece (the pieces are sold separately). One thing I did find though; the sizes are on the large side. A standard size 12 is usually too big for me, but a 10 is OK (sometimes too small). I ordered the Winser blue and white striped dress in a 10, and I had to have it altered down.
Before I leave you, I have a piece of advice and some exciting news. Advice first; for the love of all that is holy do not think that I teeter around our boat in heels, or think it’s OK to visit a boat wearing heels. Believe me, I’ve fallen in the marina once, it’s not something you want to be doing! I only slipped heels on for the pics and then carried them to dry land. There endeth the lesson for the day.
And what is this news of which you speak, I hear you cry.
Well, there’s been a whole lot of excitement behind the scenes here at Barefaced Chic HQ. It all started when seven mature bloggers met at The Blognix Retreat, found that they had masses in common and became firm friends. And through that friendship, a seed of an idea took root and began to blossom. After many meetings (both physical and digital) they found a way to move forward, to work together as a collective – The Over 40 Collective.
Over the coming weeks Lizzy, Catherine, Lisa, Annette, Nikki, Michelle and I (the “O40Co”) will be working together to create a platform, a way for brands to easily work with a group of highly motivated, talented, mature bloggers. Our intention is to share with our readers brands that offer stylish, yet affordable fashion which targets this affluent age group. Watch this space, because the future is bright, shiny and over 40!
And just to show you how diverse the style of seven 40+ women can be, here are the ladies from The Over 40 Collective – all wearing Winser London in their own unique way.
Michelle is an Aussie Brit and mum of three. She has a knack for buying great pieces and styling them really, really well – sometimes with a bone meltingly delicious retro twist. Her photography is stunning, her style and makeup advice is spot on and her sense of humour is a joy.
Nikki lives in the Lake District with her three sons, two cats and a dog called Garry. For nine years she was the editor of Selfridges’ magazine which gives her a unique insight into fashion, styling and what’s ‘out there’ for the mature woman. Her writing is perfection on a page, and The Midlife Chic community is both strong and supportive.
Catherine has been dubbed ‘The Queen of Clash’, her skill for combining patterns and colours which ‘shouldn’t’ work is legendary. Her photography is total eye candy, her blogging/photography tips are amazing (she is one of the most generous bloggers out there when it comes to sharing her knowledge) and her style is unique. An advocate of not dressing ‘age appropriately’, she encourages women to be fabulous at any age.
Lisa lives in London, writes for a fashion retailer and is mum to one gorgeous boy. She got married fashionably late at 40, and decided to trade the world of finance for the world of fashion. As her blog name suggests, Lisa love sequins (though definitely not patterns/florals) and her style is strong, bold and absolutely beautiful!
Lizzy is an optometrist by profession and lives in Skipton with her two children. She skilfully juggles her blog, family life, editing a lifestyle magazine, writing for an optometrist magazine and running her own jewellery business. Her megawatt smile can light up any room and her style is incredibly accessible.
Annette is an executive assistant and travel manager for an international organisation and has two children. She lives in Bavaria, Southern Germany which offers the most perfect backdrop for her effortlessly elegant fashion shoots. She writes her blog in both German and English and shares her incredible style with an international audience.
I think you’ll agree that they all look truly gorgeous. And believe me, they are as beautiful on the inside as they are on the out. So go check out their blogs and say hi from me 🙂
As we move forward with The Over 40 Collective I’ll keep you updated – exciting times lay ahead people, exciting times!!
