27 Small Pleasures That Make Me Content With The Here And Now

As the Summer rolls in and we see more and more of our friends and family jetting off, or planning their holidays it can be easy to get caught up in the ‘wish’.

I wish I could go there…..
I wish I could go now…..
I wish i could go too…..

Even if we have our own holiday plans it can be difficult not to yearn to leave it all behind for a few weeks. I know I frequently get caught up in the wish game. So I’d like to offer an alternative perspective.

We don’t NEED holidays to make our lives beautiful and joyous. We don’t NEED to fill our lives with more experiences in order to find happiness and contentment in the here and now. There are wonderful qualities right in front of us – all we need to do is open our eyes and hearts.

I must admit, I regularly forget this. When I remember and my head and heart are in perfect alignment, my soul is filled with joy and I start counting the perfect thing in my life. I would like to share with you 27 small pleasures that make me content with the here and now.

27 Small Pleasures

A warm Summer evening
A hug (or a cwtch as it’s known in Wales)
A mug of steaming tea
The smell of toast
Avocados (yes it may be cliché for a blogger but I adore them)
Eating out (especially if I get to sit outside)
The smell of doughnuts (even though I don’t like the taste)
A catchy song that makes me want to dance
Creating a post when I have no idea what I’m going to write (this is one of them)
Perfect moments not captured
A sunset
Learning something new
A walk
The love of my family
The smell of coffee (even thought I don’t drink a lot of it)
Knowing that my children are (on the whole) happy and healthy
A small child’s hysterical giggle
Sitting quietly and contemplating my life
Talking with my family
Bird song
Knowing I have the most amazing friends
Being able to work whenever from wherever I choose
The sound of the sea
Driving with the roof down
Last, but by no means least, feeling the love for a man so fiercely it takes my very breath away

Of course, I’m still going to look forward to my holidays and feel a tug of ‘wish it was me’ when I see someone jetting off for theirs, but I’ll try and keep these 27 small pleasures in mind.

What a wonderful post, Michelle! You’re so right that we need to remind ourselves of the little things in life that give us pleasure on a day to day basis. I have so much to be thankful for, and so much that makes me happy, like my wonderful husband, close friends and family. There’s lots more but I think I might have to share the joy and write a post about it myself – you’re inspiring me 🙂

Im a huge advocate of appreciating the little things and harp on about it, (probably annoyingly so) on my blog a lot hahaha. We all have those times when things seem a bit dire, but remembering the little things gives perspective. Meditation and mindfulness are a large part of my life, and that moment when you just look around and actually just see what is really there before you, those moments are priceless. xx

I’m just dabbling with meditation. I’m hoping it will shut up my overactive brain.

Nice little reminders there my friend. Yes the small things are the best. I used to write them down in my diary, well until child number 3 came along. And although I have less time now I do try to make a point of at least slowing down to take notice of these small things that make me so happy.
It’s funny about doughnuts because now that you mention it I love the smell but am always disappointed after eating. I think it’s that after taste of fat ick.

I’ve started writing ten things I’m grateful for every morning. It only takes a few minutes and it really sets me up for the day

Such a great mindset Michelle… I have to consciously remind myself to focus on what I have rather than don’t have. Was talking to the kids about this yesterday and telling them that one of the most important life lessons they should hold on to is to enjoy what they’re experiencing right now, rather than thinking I’ll be happy when x, y, z.
